What the treatment does
A smoothing treatment works on the outer layer of the hair, the cuticle. The solution is applied, sealed in with heat from a flat iron, and the result is a cuticle that lies flatter and smoother than before. In practical terms, that means:
- Noticeably less frizz, especially in humidity.
- Shorter blow-dry time, since smoother hair holds less moisture in a rough cuticle.
- Curl and wave that is loosened and softened, not eliminated.
- Hair that feels silkier to the touch while the treatment is active.
What it is not
This is the part worth being direct about, because it is where expectations most often go wrong before a client ever sits in the chair.
- It is not straightening. A relaxer chemically breaks and reforms the hair’s internal bonds to permanently change its structure. A keratin smoothing treatment does not do this — it changes the surface, not the underlying bond structure, so natural curl and wave are still present underneath, just quieter.
- It does not last forever. The coating wears away gradually with every wash, and most people notice the effect fading over a period of weeks to a couple of months depending on hair type, how often they wash, and what products they use. It is a temporary smoothing service, not a one-time fix.
- It is not damage repair. It can make already-processed hair feel and behave better in the short term, but it does not reverse existing damage or protect hair from future damage on its own.

- Switch to a sulphate-free shampoo, since sulphates strip the smoothing coating faster.
- Space washes out where you can — more frequent washing shortens how long the effect lasts.

If you are colouring your hair too, timing matters — smoothing treatments and colour services interact, and getting the order wrong can affect either the colour result or how the smoothing takes.
